Lane Kiffin Out Sarkisian in at Alabama
If it's about Alabama football it's making headlines. Today news broke that Lane Kiffins time in Tuscaloosa is up as the Crimson Tide's Offensive Coordinator. Wait what? You mean Kiffin and Saban don't get a long anymore? We all know Kiffin has been waiting for that next head Coaching gig since he stepped foot in the door at Alabama.
It's been rumored that Head Coach Nick Saban and Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffins relationship has soured over the past year. Lane accepted the Florida Atlantic job back in December, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with them eventually coming to a mutual agreement to part ways, but it surely didn't help. I'm extremely shocked he stayed as long as he did and he took a job at Florida Atlantic? He's taking a salary cut leaving Alabama to go coach the Owls, this situation wasn't about the money, it was more personal than that. We're talking about a guy who has been the Head Coach in the NFL and at top programs like Tennessee and USC and he jumped ship at Alabama for Florida Atlantic? Nah, something doesn't sit right about that. The Saban Kiffin romance was over.
With all that being said, Kiffin owes Nick Saban a lot for getting his coaching career back on track after he was dumped by USC. He's definitely one of the most despised and hated coaches in today's game. Being such a controversial type of guy makes things really hard to get along with Saban, as we all know he has zero tolerance for bullshit. Saban has also been known to light a fire under Lane's ass a time or two on national television and for a guy with a big ego like Kiffin's that kind of stuff just doesn't go over very well.
I can see Bama leaning heavily on the running game and outstanding defense for this last game. After seeing the semi final Peach Bowl game against Washington it became very clear they should've been handing the ball off to number 9 Bo Scarbrough a lot more this year. With his large frame and power running style he reminds me a lot of the former Heisman Trophy winner and Alabama running back Derrick Henry, once he gets those long legs pumping and running down hill shedding tackles he can't be stopped.
Today's news is shocking as the Tide are set to face off with Clemson in the National Championship in just a weeks time. I fully expect Steve Sarkisian to come in and run the exact same offense that they've been running all year and to not over complicate things for the freshman QB Jalen Hurts and the rest of the offense. Sarkisian's style of offensive play calling is not very different from Lane's in the first place as they both worked together as assistants at USC back when they were making a run for the title every year under Pete Carroll. This has become a norm at Alabama as players and coaches come and go every year it should be a easy transition for the Tide as they not only have a wealth of depth at the player position but also for coaches.
