Bowl Mania. How Many Bowls is too Many?
Today started the Bowl season and the start of Bowl Mania. Capital One sponsored Bowl Mania this year and I personally like the idea a lot. I am a huge fan of fantasy sports and pick ems and things like that because it adds a new level of interest to games that otherwise wouldn't matte to me. That has always in my mind been the a big part of the success of March Madness. With the amount of bowls seeming to grow every year something like Bowl Mania was bound to happen.
That being said the amount of bowls is also a little much. Looking at the line up of bowl games from the Bowl Mania I was left asking myself some "Who is that team?" And I follow sports and watch a lot of games a week. That means that your average guy who either likes his one team or one conference is not going to have a clue who more than half of the teams in this games are and is going to have no interest in the games.
This brings up the potential argument of expanding the College Football Playoff setup from four teams to a larger bowl of possibly the top eight or maybe even sixteen teams. I know that second number is going to get looked at like it is insane but hear me out. We currently have 41 bowl games that are played through the bowl season. If you took the top sixteen teams in the country and paired them up that would take up eight of the bowl games. They could be played this first weekend of the bowl season. Then you could still have other teams playing in bowls that are not part of the Playoffs.
Then the next weekend you take the eight remaining teams and put them in another of the four bowl games. This would then bring us to the weekend of New Years where you would have the semi final games just as you do now. This solution does not add any weeks to the season but adds more contenders to the hunt for the Championship and drives up interest levels for the Bowl Games.
Let me know what you think of this idea and what you think is the best plan of action to make the Playoffs maybe larger or better.

I agree. The fact that teams without winning records can make it to bowls means (IMO) that there are too many bowls:
